WA Web Week and our first meeting

Gary McGhee - Friday, November 07, 2008

Congratulations to all those involved in pulling together the week just ending with a packed series of events stirring up the web industry, including Edge of the Web Conference, WA Web Awards and WebJam. In a tiny corner of the week we had our first meeting with Kai, and had some good conversation about Flash, Flex, Adobe, Obama, Silverlight etc.

Some points that came out :

  1. As an official Adobe User Group we will get major Adobe products twice a year to give away to members. Kai suggested we give tickets out at each meeting, which go into the hat for the 6 monthly raffle, and speakers get extra tickets. Sounds good to me.
  2. We can possibly get some money for food and drink at meetings from Adobe (other groups do)
  3. 3:30 aint a good timeslot (but the best we could do this time around to have Kai with us)
  4. We need a regular venue - any offers/comments ? How about the Velvet Lounge on the 3rd Wednesday of each month ?
  5. Organised speakers with advertised topics are a big drawcard for people to come

Any comments ?

p.s. I talked about the concept of Flash/Flex reading its data from the HTML page it is hosted by, and that data doubling as a fallback if Flash isn't available. I've blogged about that and my current pet project Freethingo here.
